THE APPLICATION
  • NIH "F Kiosk" - NRSA Individual Fellowship Funding Opportunities - download them from this location
  • Sample Grants.gov Fellowship Application Package - This is a sample of what your application will look like. We've filled out some of the forms and indicated areas you should be aware of when completing your application. Don't copy this - it's just an example!
  • Stanford Instructions for completing the SF424R&R form - These instructions are specific to the NRSA Fellowships. They will guide you as you complete the "Face Page"of the application with information about Stanford, yourself, your project, etc. (see pages 3 & 4 of the "Sample Grants.gov Application Package" above).
  • NIH Grants.gov Individual Fellowship Application Guide - Download the most current application instructions here (Choose the "Individual Fellowship Application Guide SF424 (R&R)" from the Instructions and Other Information section). Download the PDF version and open the bookmarks; most of the information you'll need to complete your application will be found in Sections 4 & 5. Look for the screen-shots of the forms; the detailed instructions for each form follow the screenshot.
  • NIH Stipend Levels
  • NIH Grants Policy Statement
  • F31 Diversity
Are you doing an F31 Diversity application? If so, you will need to include a separate attachment on your diversity eligibility.
  • eRA Commons Tools
    • Reference Letters - You (the Applicant) will have at least three (and no more than five) references submitted on your behalf using the NIH Fellowship Reference Form (available in Microsoft Word format).
      • Your referees will go to eRA Commons Website and select the "Reference Letter" link
      • We recommend you complete the top and bottom section of the form and email it to your referees ASAP and remind them to upload to eRA Commons before the deadline.
      • Applicants can direct their referees to the Individual Fellowship Application Guide SF424 (R&R) at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/424/index.htm, then go to Section 5.4, Part B. Instructions for Referees. You will need to be sure they have the following three pieces of information:
        1. PD/PI (Fellowship applicant - this is YOU) Commons User ID
        2. PD/PI’s Last Name, as it appears on the PD/PI’s Commons account (be sure you have checked the spelling of your name on your Commons account AND your application)

TRAINING & PROTOCOL RESOURCES

Some research will require other training or protocols to be complete before funds can be dispersed.  You don’t have to complete it at the time of proposal, but will have to before research can commence.  Here are some resources to help you:

  • Human Subjects
  • APLAC Homepage
  • Lab Animal Training/Vet Service
  • Research & Lab Safety
  • IRB Rosters and Information

  • Responsible Conduct of Research
The NIH requires formal training in the responsible conduct of research. Per the NIH, Instruction must be undertaken at least once during each career stage, and at a frequency of no less than once every four years. Stanford has a specific class to address this: Med 255 Responsible Conduct of Research Class.
    • An attachment is required for all applications (limit one-page) addressing 1) Format,
      2) Subject Matter to be covered, 3) Faculty Participation, 4) Duration of instruction,
      5) Frequency of instruction
  • Online Training Tools
    • On May 30, 2007 Dr. Stephen Korn, Director of Training and Career Development NIH/NINDS, presented Guide to NIH K Awards (sponsored by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs). Check the recorded session online (there is an opening session on the page as well; both will start running at the same time and you will need to pause one of the presentations)
    • In June 2011 Dr. Christopher Dant presented Writring the NEW NIH Grant. The handout materials and recorded session are available online.

SOFTWARE RESOURCES AND INFORMATION

Adobe Reader Requirements

Additional Software Needs

  • A PDF Writer
    • You may no longer need a separate PDF Writer when using Microsoft products (Office 2007 or later). Office has a plug-in you can download free that will allow you to "SAVE AS PDF" for Microsoft products.

    • If you are creating PDFs from software other than Microsoft Office, you may need a writer. Adobe Acrobat is the recommended (and inexpensive) solution at Stanford.

  • Optional: If you need an alternate web browser (for the PC or the MAC), Mozilla Firefox is an excellent alternative browser. You can download it free.

LAB SCHEDULE AND ONLINE MATERIALS

We will be downloading your REAL NRSA application and completing some of the administrative sections in these hands-on lab sessions. This training is completely web based, and we will also be downloading and completing required Stanford-specific internal documents.

Register for labs via STARS; if no labs are booked or you need help, please contact Lisa Teresi (teresi@stanford.edu).

Labs are usually held in Polya Hall, RM: 170B PHIL Computer Lab (map available online - it's in Jordan Quad across Campus Drive from the CCSR and Beckman Center.

ONLINE MATERIALS

If you cannot come to a hands-on lab session, you can access our class materials online:

  • Class Slides/notes
Open the Powerpoint (updated 2/2012) in "Notes" View. There is a lot of information in the notes (which you can print if you need) and there are also "hot" links on the slides if you run the powerpoint in "Slide Show" view (the links are also on this webpage above and contained in the notes).
  • Class Handouts
The following documents are handed out in the labs and used as samples and instructions when we're completing the application forms. You should open and view or print them to see how your application and forms should be filled out.
