The Application
- NIH "K Kiosk" - Information about NIH Career Development Awards - download them from this location
- Sample Grants.gov Fellowship Application Package - This is a sample of what your application will look like. We've filled out some of the forms and indicated areas you should be aware of when completing your application. Don't copy this - it's just an example!
- Stanford Instructions for completing the SF424R&R form - These instructions are specific to the K-Awards. They will guide you as you complete the "Face Page"of the application with information about Stanford, yourself, your project, etc. (see pages 3 & 4 of the "Sample Grants.gov Application Package" above).
- eSubmit
(required Stanford website used to route your application for submission)
- Check the Stanford Institutional Facts page for important numbers (DUNS, Federal Tax ID, Human and Animal certifications, etc.).
- Institutional Representatives - These are the Administrative or Business Officials who will "sign" and submit your application on behalf of Stanford University:
- Biosketch Information
- Start with the sample format on the Biographical Sketch Format Page to prepare this section for all (modular and other) grant applications.
- Check Section 7.4.4.1 of the Supplemental Instructions to the SF 424(R&R) for Preparing an Individual Research Career Development Award (CDA) Application [“K” Series] for special instructions.
- Include biographical sketches of all Senior/Key Personnel and Other Significant Contributors (e.g., mentors, co-mentors).
- The Biographical Sketches may not exceed four pages per person. This 4-page limit includes the table at the top of the first page.
- NIH Grants Policy Statement
- Instructions on creating PDF documents
- NIH Grants.gov Application Instructions - Download the most current application instructions here (Choose the "Application Guide SF424 (R&R) – Adobe Forms Version A" from the Instructions and Other Information section). Download the PDF version and open the bookmarks; most of the information you'll need to complete your application will be found in Section 4, 5, and 7 (information in section 7 supercedes information in section 4). Look for the screen-shots of the forms; the detailed instructions for each form follow the screenshot.

TRAINING & PROTOCOL RESOURCES |
Some research will require other training or protocols to be complete before funds can be dispersed. You don’t have to complete it at the time of proposal, but will have to before research can commence. Here are some resources to help you:
SOFTWARE RESOURCES AND INFORMATION |
Adobe Reader Requirements
Additional Software Needs
- A PDF Writer
- You may no longer need a separate PDF Writer when using Microsoft products (Office 2007 or later). Office has a plug-in you can download free that will allow you to "SAVE AS PDF" for Microsoft products.
- If you are creating PDFs from software other than Microsoft Office, you may need a writer. Adobe Acrobat is the recommended (and inexpensive) solution at Stanford.
- Optional: If you need an alternate web browser (for the PC or the MAC), Mozilla Firefox is an excellent alternative browser. You can download it free.
