hESC Required Tutorial and Test
All faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and students, as well as visiting scholars and researchers, are required to complete hESC training before they begin work on any project involving human embryonic stem cells. This training is tracked through the Stanford Training and Registration System (STARS). To receive credit for this class you must register and launch this class through STARS.
Required Steps:
- Register for required training in STARS (Follow along with a PDF Copy)
- Review the training (Trouble launching training? Check our Web Hints)
- Launch the required test (this must be completed by anyone planning to perform hESC research before the research can start!)
Instructions for Registering in STARS & Launching Training
- Log into AXESS and choose the Training Tab at the top of the page
- Select "My Learning" from the STARS menu
- In the “Search the Catalog" box, type "hESC" and click the “Search” button. Your results should show one class "Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Tutorial (ORA-1127)"
Note: If multiple classes show, choose the one with the note "This activity Starts on 01/10/2008"
- Click the "Enroll" button, then on the next page click the "Submit Enrollment" button.
- You may do one of the following:
- Select the "Launch" link at this time, but please note it will only launch the class. You will need to return to you "My Learning" page to launch the test
- The other option is to select the "My learning" link, and Find the Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Tutorial in which you are enrolled
- Click on the blue hyperlink title of the class
- In the Activity Syllabus there are 2 components to the hESC training:
- The hESC Required On-line Tutorial
- The hESC Required On-line Test (must be passed with 100% accuracy)
- Launch the tutorial component; when you complete it, you will be prompted to return to STARS to launch the test component.
Instructions for Returning to STARS to Launch the Test
- Login to STARS (via AXESS) and click on the Training Tab
- Select "My Learning" from the STARS menu
- Find the Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Tutorial in which you are enrolled
- Click on the blue hyperlink title of the class
- In the Activity Syllabus find the "hESC Required Test" component of the class and select the Launch link
- After you successfully complete the online test, your STARS record will be automatically be updated and you will have satisfied this requirement; if you are working on this class for Cardinal Curriculum Certification, it will count as a Level II elective.

- If your pop-up blocker doesn't allow you to "launch" the training, hold your "CTRL" key down while you click the launch link.
