Award Types

Sponsored project agreements are typically categorized into four major areas: grants, cooperative agreements, contracts and clinical trials.

A grant is defined as general assistance bestowed without expectation of any tangible deliverables, besides a final report.

A cooperative agreement is defined as assistance that substantially involves the sponsor in the outcome of the research results.

A contract is generally described as a procurement action. The sponsor is procuring research from the institution and acts as a technical overseer.

A clinical trial is defined as an agreement that concerns medical research, typically involving human subjects, and occasionally, the Food Drug Administration.

Sometimes, the Veterans Administration (VA) will engage in Intergovernmental Personnel Agreements - (IPA). This is a contract for the VA to purchase services of a specific SU staff/faculty. Please check the School of Medicine website for information on how to handle this process.
