Competitive Segments

A competitive segment is a period of time covered by a new or renewal (competing continuation) proposal or resulting award.   Typically, Stanford will submit a multi-year proposal to an agency and receive an award for the initial budget period plus a promise of continued support for the remaining years covered in our competitive proposal, contingent upon satisfactory progress and availability of funding.  This initial budget period, plus all remaining "continuation" years forecast in the original proposal, constitutes the award's "competitive segment."  A new competitive segment occurs at the time a project is renewed or competitively reviewed for additional funding.
