Increase in Stanford’s Support of RA Tuition on Sponsored Projects

Effective September 1, 2023 Stanford is changing its support of the graduate student Research Assistantships (RA) tuition allowance charged to sponsored projects from 40% to 55% for non-School of Medicine sponsored projects subject to Stanford’s full indirect cost/facilities & administrative (IDC/F&A) rates

Please note the School of Medicine (SoM) has a unique funding model for Biosciences doctoral programs in which a majority of its students are fully funded without research assistantships during their first four years.

Action Item

All non-SoM sponsored project proposal budgets subject to Stanford’s full IDC/F&A rates that include graduate student Research Assistantship tuition beginning FY24 (9/1/23) and beyond, must incorporate this change in support of the RA tuition allowance.

To facilitate budget development, the Stanford Graduate Financial Support website has an Academic Year 2023-24 Tuition Allowance Table in an interactive Google Sheet. The sheet has dropdown options and check boxes to choose the tuition and funding source types and view the TAL split calculations.

For any non-SoM sponsored project budget development assistance questions, please contact the ORA Client Advocacy & Education Team.  We’re here to help!
