1. Overview

Reutilization and re-purposing of property is a priority at Stanford.   Furniture in good condition that is no longer needed and Capital Equipment in working order and no longer used should be made available to all University departments via the Stanford University Furniture Reutilization Program or the Reuse Website for potential reuse (for Stanford business purposes only). The Reuse SLACK channel #stanford-property-reuse can also be used for this purpose; however, Capital Equipment cannot be posted there. In this way, the University maximizes the benefit of the items and saves costs of unnecessary duplicative purchases.  Items posted and not re-utilized are subsequently declared excess and processed for disposition.

2. Furniture Reutilization Program

Stanford’s Furniture Reutilization Program is managed by the Surplus Property group within the Property Management Office(PMO).  The program maintains warehousing space in Redwood City, where furniture is stored until needed.  Furniture in the program is for Stanford business use only, and may not be relocated to private business or residential locations.  The program is a resource for departments providing cost savings, expedient availability and opportunities to acquire furniture at little to no cost while reducing waste and landfill.

3. Reuse site

The  Reuse Site is Stanford’s on-line mechanism for staff and faculty having a Stanford University Network ID (SUNet ID) to advertise usable items they no longer need and are willing to transfer to another department.  Capital Equipment can be posted and requires Department Property Administrator’s (DPA) approval.    After the DPAs approval, the item is posted to the reuse site, anyone with access to the site may claim the item.  Once posted and approved the DPA should follow the post and when claimed contact their Property Programs Manager (PPM) to finalize the transfer.  Instructions for posting items on the reuse site can be found in the Reuse Request dashboard in SPARC.

4. SLACK #stanford-property-reuse channel

The SLACK #stanford-property-reuse channel is available to post and view items for reuse.  Users may post Stanford non-barcoded assets, such as furniture, peripheral electronics, office supplies, and lab supplies.  Perishable or regulated items, such as food or chemicals, as well as computers should not be posted.  Stanford barcoded capital assets should not be posted or requested.  Posting of personally owned items is not allowed on the channel.  For additional guidance contact a Campus support Team Member

Items claimed are intended for onsite Stanford use only.  Once claimed, arrangements should be made directly between the owner and the claimer to allow items to change hands.
